Black Mat is a dedicated space for yoga, breathwork and meditation.
We strive to create a welcoming environment for everyone, from experienced students to complete beginners new to exploring this realm. We offer various membership options including unlimited access and monthly upfront memberships, 5-class pack, 10-class pack, and drop-in rates. Check our website for more information.
We offer a variety of yoga classes, including Flow, Hatha, Yin, Breathwork, Meditation, and specialty workshops. Check our schedule for details.
Wear comfortable clothing.
Please bring a water bottle.
You might like to bring a towel, especially in a dynamic class where you are likely to sweat.
We provide mats and all props in our studio. However you are always welcome to bring any personal props that may enhance your experience.
We are located above the Missing Gorilla on the 1st floor. Take the staircase to the left up and you’ll feel the Black Mat Yoga grounding vibe when you reach the top.
No prior experience is necessary. While our classes are suitable for all levels, we recommend Slow Flow, Hatha, and Yin Yoga If you are a complete beginner. In any class, our teachers will provide modifications to accommodate all levels.
We recommend flagging it with your teacher if it your very first yoga class so you can be looked after throughout the experience.
Most of our classes are 55 – 60 minutes long.
Our meditation classes are 30 minutes
Weekend Classes are all 60 mins.
Check the schedule for specific class durations.
Please arrive between 5 – 10 minutes before the class starts. Doors are available for students to enter 10 minutes prior to the class starting.
Remove your shoes before entering the space.
Shoes and personal belongings are to be placed in the pigeonholes located in the studio. Please ensure phones are either on silent or aeroplane mode and are not beside your mat.
Check yourself in on the iPad.
Our classes start promptly. We kindly ask that you refrain from entering the space if a class has already begun as it can be distracting for other students and our teachers. Please allow yourself plenty of time to arrive and find a park.
Make the teacher aware of all injuries or concerns before class. This allows our teachers to offer modifications to suit your needs. This information is valuable to us even if you are confident in modifying your own practice.
If you are returning to movement after injury, please get an all clear from your doctor before attending our classes.
If you are unsure, we have private yoga classes available where one of our teachers will work alongside you and your injury.
If you are unwell, we kindly ask you refrain from attending the studio and stay home to rest.
We recommend exercising caution if you are considering beginning yoga during your pregnancy and do not have any prior yoga experience. Check in with your doctor. A specific prenatal class may be a better option for you.
If you already have an established yoga practice it is safe for you to practice yoga throughout your pregnancy.
Please let our teachers know you are pregnant prior to class so they can discuss alternative options to take during the class. As most of our Flow classes roll on without a stop/start approach there isn’t a whole lot of time to be given alternative poses throughout the class. If you have a base level of yoga knowledge and are confident with modifications, you are welcome to attend a Flow class. Alternatively, we would recommend Iyengar, Hatha or Slow Flow as there is more space for corrections in these classes.
You must be at least 14 years of age to practice yoga in our studio. Students between the ages of 14 and 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian when practicing yoga.
We have limited changing facilities, we do not have showers at our studio. Please plan accordingly.
Yes, we offer private yoga sessions. These can be purchased through the website. Alternatively, you can contact us to schedule a private session with one of our teachers.
Yes, we regularly host workshops and special events. Check our website or social media for all upcoming events.
You can stay updated by following us on Instagram @blackmat_yoga or facebook and subscribing to our mailing list.
We recommend downloading the Black Mat Yoga app and creating an account. It is the easiest way to manage your class bookings. Alternatively, you can book classes via the web browser.
We also accept card payments or cash in the correct quantity at the studio. Unfortunately, we are not able to give change for cash payments. Please arrive early if you are planning on making a payment at the studio. We are not able to take payments once the class has begun.
Please keep in mind that if you attend a class without a prior booking, there is a chance you will not be granted entry if the class is full.
